Ideal Candidates
Sclerotherapy is helpful for women and men who don’t like the small to medium blood vessels that are visible through the skin of their body and face. Usually, these spider veins are most obvious on the lower legs and thighs so patients avoid wearing shorts, swimsuits, or other clothing that reveal their spider veins. Patients need to be in good health before their appointment to minimize the chance of complications or reactions. Patients should not be pregnant or have a history of blood clots.
Procedure Technique
Sclerotherapy may be completed in one of our treatment rooms quickly and typically without anesthesia. The spider veins being corrected will be determined, and the skin will be sanitized. A fine-gauge needle will be inserted into the vein and the sclerosing solution will be applied. After the needle is empty, it will be removed and a bandage will be put over the injection site to stop any minor bleeding. This process will be repeated until all spider veins have been treated.
What to Expect
Following sclerotherapy, you may leave when you feel comfortable to get back to all normal activities. You may see some redness, bruising, or swelling in the treated areas, but this will typically heal in a short time. Compression garments will be recommended by Dr. Marcos to encourage blood circulation after your sclerotherapy treatment for faster, better results. It may take some time for the sclerotherapy to work, but eventually, the treated blood vessels should shrink, change to white, and then fade or disappear. You may want two or more sclerotherapy sessions to achieve optimal results, but most patients are pleased with their results after their first treatment.
